Strive For The Best

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as unto the Lord, and not unto men.” Colossians 3:23
As I was growing up I often heard many godly people whom God placed in my life say that whatever you do you need to give it your best. Several years ago I taught a Jr. Church lesson on giving God your best and right after that the Lord gave me this poem. It depicts a man who has reached the end of his life and is looking back on it with regret for all the blessings he missed because he didn’t settle for God’s best for his life. The poem is titled “Strive for the Best.”
I sit here today in deep contrition
Over past missed blessings I shudder to mention
A life lived for God seemed almost like bliss
Tremendous blessings ahead that I sadly would miss
God's will for me then was as clear as day
I can't wait to live it, I often would say
A decision had I that was the ultimate test
To discern between what was good and was God's best.
I looked at my future and my current state
And made a my decision which I've now grown to hate
I decided to remain and take my rest
Rather than go forward and strive for God's best
Don't settle dear Christian for what's good enough
Though sometimes the way of the best seems rough
The blessings of God are well worth the test
Don't strive for strive for what's good, strive for the best.
